Competing is trying your hardest at everything you do for the betterment of the team while satisfying yourself knowing that you made a difference. This is true not only in sports, but in everything you do in life.
A team sport offers so many things, but the biggest benefit that you receive, is knowing that you and the other people on your team are working hard together for a common goal. Working hard for one’s self is rewarding, but being a key player to a bigger cause is very special. It’s not always easy working with other people, but when you can put differences aside and work for a common goal, it brings success to the team.
Winning is important, but it isn’t everything. As long as you know in your heart that you did everything that you could do, and you still fall short of winning, you will learn something about yourself and your teammates. Through adversity, comes the possibility of future greatness. Maximizing the effort you give during every game or practice will not only benefit your development, but your teammates as well.
Every athlete should play hard from the start of a game until the last whistle of a game. When you feel tired, you need to dig deep to make a difference for your team. This is “having heart” or “grinding it out”. You never give up and you always give the maximum effort until you come off the field. Everything in life is not designed to be easy. This is when you develop character and drive for greatness. If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.
Athletics provides everyone the opportunity to learn things that they will use in their every day life. We learn to work with others, leadership, trust, pride, losing gracefully, winning graciously, and hard work, amongst many other things. The question is; are you doing your best? Are you making the most out of this experience? Are you building a team or are you just participating? These are all valid questions that you should be asking yourself.
